The role of flight engineer only became necessary with the advent of the four-engined heavy bombers; the Short Stirling, Handley page Halifax and Avro Lancaster.  Their fuel, hydraulic and electrical systems for instance were too complicated for the pilot to administer whilst he was also flying the aircraft, possibly trying to take avoiding action from flak or night fighters or pay attention to the multitude of other possible distractions.
